Reaching Out In A networked World – Book Review

Submitted by stanfetting on June 28, 2010 – 9:39 amOne Comment

I met someone recently who works as a communications manager at a large Baptist church. He described his role as being “responsible for everything you see, hear, and touch” at the church. In particular, he was responsible for ensuring that everything the church communicated was in sync with its missional purpose and with the intended audience in mind.

Lynne Baab’s book helps churches understand the big picture of communications in a church environment and provides some useful guidance on how to put together a more coherent and consistent communications platform.

Every church has a communications platform, it exists through newsletters, décor, websites, brochures, flyers, signs, etc. It’s just that some churches have thought about it a lot and others have allowed an uncoordinated platform to arise, like the town planning of a gold rush town. Baab helps us to stop and think intelligently about all the key aspects of how we project our identity and what we are saying through it. A great book to read and own and refer to.

Lynne Baab is a Presbyterian minister and author of seven books and three Bible study guides. She has a Ph.D. in communication from the University of Washington. She lives with her husband in Dunedin, New Zealand, where she is a lecturer in pastoral theology at the University of Otago and adjunct tutor at the Knox Centre for Ministry and Leadership

Her website has got some excellent resources including a free e-book entitled Websites That Work.
